Barbara Chin
Barbara’s road to becoming a gourmet chef specialising in wholesome vegan cuisine started in the late 1990s when she helped to take care of her husband’s friend, who had cancer. The friend stayed at the family home for more than a month. During that time, Barbara studied intensively to concoct healthy dishes for him. “It was all self-study and experimenting, including making salad dressings,” Barbara said. He felt much better while on the diet. She has since extended her loving touch to other cancer patients, going to their homes to cook for them, or inviting them to her home for meals where she offers a holistic and warm environment conducive to building up their confidence and regaining their health. Her two young sons also help by interacting with their guests.
It was in 1996 that the soft-spoken Barbara, who hails from East Malaysia, turned to organically-grown produce and foodstuff. She was a beautician for several years, and didn’t even know how to cook, until she began to help cancer patients and discovered her passion was in the kitchen and in providing wholesome meals. Her desire to benefit more people and to show that vegetarian food can be healthy led to the creation of LivinGreens, where she is the main chef. Her innovation in devising dishes that score high in both nutritional value and taste has drawn her praise from customers, who sometimes seek tips on cooking from her. |
